I read a movie review on the new movie Catching Fire.

The reviews claim was that the movie was very good and he gave it 4 stars out of five. He gave it a thumbs up because he thought that the suspense kept you on the edge of your seat and it kept you wanting more. He said that the way the movie left everyone wondering what was going to happen next and wanting to find out.

Tone

In his speech, Winston Churchill, uses a somewhat serious and dedicated tone. He says things such as "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat". This creates some sort of atmosphere that made the people feel his seriousness and understand how dedicated he was to succeeding as the Prime Minister. The way he spoke showed people that him becoming the Prime Minister came with a lot of seriousness and that he was not going to play around with them. He also complimented them on their war with the German in order to show how his new Era is going to be like.

In the beginning of her essay, Tamar Derby begins her essay by stating why she thinks that Applebaum's argument was not effective. She talks about how Applebaum did not use a fair-minded ethos in order to convince her readers. If she wanted to be more effective she should have used someone who is an expert in the field of Nuclear Power to explain how much Nuclear Power really costs. Another mistake that Applebaum made was failing to support her arguments which could have been more convincing if she had supported them. In my opinion Tamar Derby is right and Applebaum's  essay could have used more support for her arguments.

Activity Page 20

You are trying to persuade your parents that a "gap year"- taking a year off between high school graduation and college- will be beneficial.

I would start to appeal to their ethos by bringing in or contacting someone who has taken a gap year after their graduation and has turned out to be really successful. I would have that person come and talk about how taking a gap year was beneficial and how it would help me. Then I would try and appeal to their pathos by saying that after I go off to college that I would most likely moving out of their house forever and that I would like to spend just one more year under their roof where I do not have to worry about school and where I can really enjoy their company. Finally I would appeal to their logos by saying that taking a gap year after graduation would help me know what I would like to study once I decide to go to college. It will let me experience several jobs and see what I would really like to do with the rest of my life.

Page 17: Pathos Activity

General Eisenhower starts to appeal ethos by letting these soldiers know that they are about to go into the battle which will probably end the war that they have been fighting in for the past several months. He makes them feel that all the hard work that they have been putting into this war is finally going to pay off. Then he tells them that the whole world will be watching them making them feel a sense of pride and honor. He ends by saying that he has full confidence in the soldiers courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. I think that this is where he applies ethos the most; in this part he seems like a proud father sending his sons off to war. This probably made all of the soldiers who were listening to him feel a sense of love and care from General Eisenhower which attacked them emotionally.

Activity #2

No Texting and Driving
I picked this public service announcement as my civil and effective text because it does not try and deceive you or take advantage of you in any way. The whole purpose of this PSA is to help you make good decisions and not text and drive because you can end up taking away someone else's life or even your own life.

Neutrogena
I picked this Neutrogena commercial as my manipulative and deceptive text because it is lying to you an making you think that it will clear up your face which is not always the case. In their commercials they use people that never even had pimples and they you that after they used their products that all their pimples were gone. This commercial lies to you and tricks you into buying their product.

The difference between these too commercials are that one is for the good of you and the people around you and the other is only for the good of the company which is trying to sell you their products.
